Browse and Learn Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 2025
Overview
Browse and Learn ("we", "our") is a Chrome extension that helps you learn languages by translating words on web pages. This policy describes what data we collect and how we use it.
Data We Collect
We collect the following categories of data. This disclosure is aligned with our Chrome Web Store data usage declaration.
Personally identifiable information
Account info: If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, display name, and profile photo from Google. We use this to identify your account and link your subscription.
Anonymous usage: You can use Browse and Learn without signing in. We create an anonymous identifier to provide the service and (if you later sign in) to preserve your subscription.
Authentication information
We store sign-in tokens and account identifiers (e.g. from Google Sign-In and Firebase) in your browser so you stay signed in. We do not collect your passwords; authentication is handled by Google.
Website content
Translation requests: Text you select to translate on web pages is sent to our servers to produce translations. We do not use this content to train models for other users; we may use it to improve our translation quality and fix errors (e.g. when you report a mistake). We do not collect your emails, private messages, or chat content.
User activity
Analytics: We record anonymized usage and activity (e.g. feature use, translation events, errors) to improve the product. We separate development from production data.
Error reports: If you report a translation error, we store the original text, translation, and optional context to fix issues.
Financial and payment information
Stripe: Subscription and payment are handled by Stripe. We store subscription status (e.g. trial end date, plan) linked to your account. We do not store your full payment details (e.g. credit card numbers); Stripe does. See Stripe's privacy policy.
Location
When you use our servers (e.g. for translation or sign-in), we may receive your IP address or general region. We use this for security, rate limiting, and abuse prevention. We do not collect precise GPS or location history.
What we do not collect
We do not collect health information, your personal communications (e.g. emails, texts, or chat messages), or a history of web pages you have visited. We do not sell or transfer your data to third parties for purposes unrelated to providing and improving Browse and Learn.
How We Use Data
- To provide and improve Browse and Learn (translation, pronunciation, subscription access).
- To respond to support and feedback (e.g. uninstall surveys, error reports).
- To prevent abuse and enforce our terms (e.g. rate limits, blocking).
Data Sharing
We do not sell your data. We share data only:
- With service providers that help us run Browse and Learn (e.g. Google Cloud, Firebase, Stripe), under contracts that limit use to providing the service.
- When required by law or to protect our rights and safety.
Data Retention
Account data: Retained while your account exists and as needed for legal and support purposes after closure.
Translation/analytics: Retained as needed to operate and improve the product; aggregated or anonymized where possible.
Payment/subscription: Retained as required for tax, refunds, and disputes (typically per applicable law).
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your data, or to object to or restrict processing. Contact us (see below) to exercise these rights.
Security
We use industry-standard measures (e.g. HTTPS, authentication, rate limiting) to protect your data. Sensitive sites (e.g. banking, healthcare) are excluded from translation by design.
Children
Browse and Learn is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
Changes
We may update this policy. We will post the new version and, for material changes, notify you (e.g. in-app or by email) where required by law.
